Natural Facial Skincare Products

naturalfacialcarerfb1
A few months ago I made the switch over to all natural products. I can give most of the credit as to why to the Toxicology class I took in university last term. Every day my jaw would drop to the floor, as I learnt more shocking and horrific facts about what we do to the world we live in today. I realized that if I am a being from nature and a part of nature, why am I smearing lotions and potions full of chemicals and toxins onto my skin hoping for a miracle? Humans evolved from the earth, and we will return into it – that is a natural environment that certainly does not include parabens, synthetic colours or phthalates, to name a few. Also, I was learning just how damaging these products are to the environment – and that enough was a reason for change.

The products I have here today are what I use on my face every day and/or night. I swear by these products, they all smell so incredible and they are much more friendly to the environment and my skin. I have recently had to make a dietary switch over to an Autoimmune Paleo AIP diet due to allergies and finding natural products that are free of allergens is actually a lot easier than I thought. Also, I had always struggled with severe cystic acne and eczema, and no matter how many different creams, or washes or medications I used on my face, my face remained dry and full of stubborn acne. Since I switched over to all natural products I very rarely get cystic acne, and my skin glows!

Skincare that doesn’t cost the earth

Things to look for: when purchasing natural products, I try to only support companies that package their products in glass containers. This is because glass containers are 100% recyclable, and glass can be continually recycled into more glass, maintaining high quality. Creating plastic items, on the other hand, releases toxic emissions into the air, and recycled plastic loses its quality and so new plastic must always be made. Plastic pollution is also devastating to the environment. Also, plastic containers are well known for leaching harmful chemicals (from which they are composed of) into the product they store, which is then absorbed into our skin. Really try to reduce consumption of plastic items, and recycle everything possible!

A lot of these natural products are GMO free! While there is a lot of controversy on GMO’s, I am personally glad to avoid them. Here is a well written article on GMOs for you to read.

I was able to find a lot of amazing natural skincare products at Dad’s Organic Market in Saskatoon, and surprisingly at Winners as well. However I really want to take the time to talk about an incredible company here in Saskatoon that is really taking sustainably sourced products to the next level –  Green Tree Beauty will plant a tree for every product sold. You can purchase products from them online, or at Alchemy Clothing & Salon here in Saskatoon. They source natural, sustainable and cruelty-free cosmetics with a goal of being kinder to the environment and to others. Definitely a company I feel happy about supporting!

I immediately smooth on a pump of this after the toner onto my face and neck. This is a great product which adds a highly beneficial layer to my skincare regime. This serum helps to reduce scars and fine lines, and definitely makes my skin more radiant. It is packed with antioxidants, vitamins and organic compounds, which help my skin to repair itself and look its best.

Antipodes Vanilla Pod Hydrating Day Cream

This is an incredible day-time moisturizer. A little goes a long way with this moisturizing product! My skin is dry, and yet very oily and this moisturizer makes my skin feel comfortable! It has an incredible fresh scent, and this company will continue to be one of my favourites due to their high quality products.

Sukin Rose Hip Hydrating Day Cream

First of all, this cream smells like sugar cookies – I want to eat it. Second of all, how amazing is this sustainable company? This is a very moisturizing cream as kakadu plum, rose hip oil and pomegranate work together to combat early signs of aging and dryness. There is a lot of product here that will also go a long way!

This sunscreen is the best sunscreen I’ve ever used. It has a natural tint to it so it does not have that gross white residue that a lot of sunscreens leave behind. It does not clog up my skin, and it is also not greasy at all! It is water resistant and I mix it with my daily moisturizer then apply to my face and neck.

Andalou Naturals Purple Carrot Luminous Night Cream

  • Purchased from Dad’s Organic Market (or here)
  • Made in the USA
  • Vegan & Cruelty Free
  • Uses Non-GMO, certified organic and fair trade ingredients
  • 98% Nature Derived

I use this cream every night. It is very rich and has a pleasant fruity smell. This stuff ensures my eczema is never here to stay, and I wake up with super clear, bright and glowing skin. This cream is very rich in antioxidants, and helps defend against UV damage, hyper pigmentation and premature aging.

Northlore Rosehip Seed Oil

This oil is my go-to product. I use it under all of my creams, night and day. This oil has multiple uses: as a cleanser or as a moisturizer. This product saves my skin from the typical Saskatchewan climate. I find that layering these products has really benefitted my skin. 1 drop is enough to smooth over my face for the day time (as I don’t want to use too much under my makeup) and 3-4 drops is enough for my face and my neck for bedtime.

Glutino Toaster Pastries

Time to introduce your morning routine to some fun, Glutino has helped to make mornings a little bit easier with their toaster pastries!
bb3No matter what your mornings look like, these delicious toaster pastries will help to make them a little better. High in fibre and satisfying, these pastries just need to be popped into the toaster then served! The crust is very crispy and complements the filling. I guarantee that these don’t taste ‘gluten-free’, they are excitingly good! I like to pair these with a bowl full of fresh fruit and a cup of tea.bb1The Strawberry Toaster Pastry tastes like strawberry jam, sweet and familiar.bb2My favourite, the Apple Cinnamon Toaster Pastry tastes like apple sauce, that refreshing taste of apple paired with sweet cinnamon!bb4A quick breakfast or a great snack!

February Favourites 2015

febfaves

Well, it is finally March, one step closer to Spring! I can actually hear birds singing outside my window! Here are some of my favourite products from February!

Maybelline Color Tattoo Metal Eyeshadow: these eyeshadows are amazing, they have been my favourites for so long now. I have extremely oily eyelids, and before I found these, I was packing on high-end primers on my eyeslids and my eyeshadow would still only last half the day. With the color tattoo formula, I do not need any primer and they last all day! They also act as a great base for putting other powder eyeshadows on top of!

Katy Perry Royal Revolution: Remember the Killer Queen scent? Well this perfume still has some of the base notes that make it familiar, however this perfume is more fruity. I love the bottle and even though I do tend to reapply this perfume throughout the day it still makes the cut, due to its scent. It reminds me of blueberry for some reason. It is a comforting, fruity, sexy smell.

Stila ‘stay all day’ waterproof liquid eye liner: I am somewhat cursed in the sense that whenever I laugh, my eyes water… really badly. After going through almost all the drugstore waterproof eyeliners and not finding anything that worked, I turned to this eyeliner. This eyeliner goes on so smoothy and has a fantastic tip that doesn’t lose its shape! I love how thin I am able to make the line with this tip! I will admit, this product still smears away when my eyes water really badly, but when I don’t have that problem this eyeliner stays put all day! Its the best one I’ve tried so far.

Covergirl Clump Crusher Mascara: this mascara has long been my go-to and I recently purchased the water resistant formula. The combination of this brush and the formula is incredible, I never get clumps, just beautiful, fully defined, long lashes. This stuff stays all day and does not flake. I also love that this stuff is so easy to remove, unlike most water resistant/proof formulas. After using this mascara for 2 years, I still haven’t found anything better and I keep coming back to it. Its won me over completely.

Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask: This is a great face mask, as it works well at cleaning out pores and leaves my skin soft. I also love how this mask dries quickly so I don’t have to sit around forever waiting to wash it off. I use this once every 2 weeks and follow up with a deep moisturizer. I also use this as a spot treatment for acne and it really helps!

Willow and Sage Magazine: This is my new favourite magazine, it is everything that I am about. You need this magazine if you like making your own natural beauty products and learning about natural health!

Aveeno Fresh Essentials Review

Aveeno is a brand that I have grown up with, being natural, gentle and affordable. It has always been my go-to drugstore product line. Today I am reviewing the Fresh Essentials line, which incorporates active naturals that help to combat many environmental stressors in the skin.

Aveeno Fresh Essentials Daily Nourishing Moisturizer
I wrote a review on this facial lotion over a year ago. So, I have actually been using this moisturizer to start off my mornings for over a year! My favourite thing about this moisturizer is that it has SPF30! I also love the packaging, the pump is so convenient! This product is really moisturizing and has a delicate floral scent which I love. This product does not cause acne, is really hydrating and is a heavier cream based product, so a little goes a long way!

Aveeno Fresh Essentials Daily Exfoliating Scrub
This exfoliator provides a very gentle exfoliation, so it is suitable to be used daily. This is a gentle product, which doesn’t leave the skin feeling raw afterwards. I would recommend using this product in the morning, or removing your makeup before you use it, as it does not contain soap. This creamy exfoliator is great at buffing and polishing away impurities to leave your face smooth and soft.

Aveeno Fresh Essentials Hydrating Night Cream
This cream is very comparable to the daily moisturizer, same scent, consistency and both contain vitamins A, C, and E. I love how this cream does not cause acne, as most night creams tend to do that to me. This product takes a bit to absorb into my skin, as I tend to use more of it for a more hydrating effect. I massage it in and it absorbs quite nicely. I have eczema and this is the first winter I have not gotten huge dry patches on my face and I do believe it is because of this product.

December 2014 Favourites

decfav2

I have so many goodies I want to blog about and review, so I figured doing monthly favourites would be very beneficial to my beauty product hoarding tendencies. So here are my December Favourites!

decfav1

1. Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh Fragrance – This perfume is my new favourite, I cannot describe it without using the words fresh, uplifting and deliciously sweet. This is such a delicate floral perfume that I will definitely be repurchasing. It scent lasts all day on clothes but I do find I tend to reapply it throughout the day, mostly cause I love to smell it again myself!

2. Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh Body Lotion – I love how this lotion smells exactly like the perfume, and it isn’t too strong. I like using the body wash, lotion and perfume together to build up the scent!

3. Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh Shower Gel – This body wash is heavenly to use in the shower, it foams and gives off the most pleasant aroma!

4. NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella – This colour is the perfect flattering matte red, and it has great lasting power! It is not too drying and applies easily and does not smudge!

NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugien – This color is good for amping up the natural lip with a bit of colour and shimmer.

5. Garage Moon Necklace – This necklace is so intricate and delicate, I love its simplicity and ability add interest to an outfit.

6. Redken Color Extend Shampoo and Conditioner – After I got lowlights, my hairdresser recommended this duo and my hair colour hasn’t faded! They have a clean scent and are made with cranberry oil!

7. Clinique Moisture Surge Intense – This cream-gel is handy during the winter months. When my skin gets very dry, I like to use a lot as a mask for 10 minutes then pat in the excess. It is a very rich moisturizing cream that gives my face a very hydrated, smooth and glowing look. It does have a bit of an unpleasant scent however you cannot smell it once applied! A little goes a long way with this product! I recommend this for drier skin types.

8. KORRES Wild Rose Mask – This mask is packed full of Vitamin C and really helps to hydrate and brighten the skin. Really great to help improve sun damage and dryness.

9. Cake Milk Made Velveteen Hand Creme – Well if the fact that this lotion has marshmallow extract doesn’t win you over then I don’t know what will 😉 This lotion smells simply delicious and is a great lotion to keep in a purse to keep your hands super soft!

10. Voluspa Santiago Huckleberry Coconut Wax Candle – I purchase this scent of candle religiously from Indigo. The glass container is beautifully designed and the smell of this candle is sweet and delicious. The scent will actually be able to fill a room, which I love!

11. Scentsational Natural Soy Candle in Romantic – This candle gives off a delicate floral scent and is another great candle to have burning to give off a wonderful scent in your home.

Well there are my December favourites! What are your favourites?

Lavanila Perfume Review

perfume1

Yes, I am a sucker for perfume however I am also very picky. Saying this, I think I have found my new favourite brand of perfumes! Lavanila Laboratories Fragrances have won my heart (and nose) over. I bought one perfume and loved it so much that the next day I went out and bought 2 more! Not only are these perfumes completely free from chemicals but they are also rich in natural and organic ingredients which provides anti-oxidants for your skin!

I am pleasantly surprised at the staying power this perfume has. It is very high quality and the scent lasts forever! I like this because I don’t need a lot of perfume to achieve a good scent, these perfumes will last longer because you don’t need to keep reapplying (or you can because I love smelling them all over again 😉 ) The scents are amazing too, they are so uplifting and wonderful. I have Vanilla Lavender, Vanilla Coconut and Vanilla Grapefruit. I love that these fragrances are so unique from any other perfume, I’ve never smelt anything like them!

perfume2

Here is where this company stands out to me: These perfumes are made with no animal testing, are completely vegan, have no parabens, petrochemicals, phthalates, silicones, propylene glycol, mineral oils, synthetic dyes, sulfates, chemical sunscreens or aluminum AND are made with all-natural and organic ingredients that are completely free of harsh chemicals. The perfume is organic sugar cane alcohol with exotic essential oils and skin soothing botanicals. These products are fresh and have over 30 vitamins, minerals and amino acids. What is not to love???

I cannot wait to try out more of their products!

The Miracle of Essential Oils

The Miracle of Essential Oils

The Oils: Essential Oils can be used to heal the body and mind. The most important thing is to purchase the purest Essential Oils, cheaper oils will usually be diluted or have synthetic manufactured perfume mixed in. This makes them less effective and also dangerous if treated like a pure oil. Also try to make sure the glass container is dark to protect the oil from light. Pure essential oils should not be applied directly unless diluted. You should remember that Essential oils are very potent, when used in large quantities they can be toxic. Less is more! Like any other product, you should ensure that you are not allergic to each oil by testing a small area on your skin prior to using it regularly.

Dilution: my favourite way to dilute essential oils is to mix them with coconut oil, grape seed oil, almond oil or jojoba oil. (water will NOT work).

Perfume: Of course, essential oils would be a natural, pure and nontoxic perfume that you can specifically make to suit your exact needs. You play with mixing different scents that you like or which have the health benefits that you require. One way to create your own perfume is here! You can make a solid perfume and you can replace the essential oil I used with one or multiple essential oils that you desire.

Cleaning: Essential Oils have antibacterial, antiviral and antiseptic properties. They can be used to clean the air, clean countertops, freshen up laundry, clean the bathroom and much more. Essential oils will disinfect and leave any surface smelling good! The best oils to use for cleaning are orange, peppermint and tea tree essential oils. Stay tuned as I will be making cleaning solutions and blogging about them soon!

The Oils I Own:
(I recommend using the oils externally: Aromatically – diffused or inhaled. Topically –  applied onto skin within a carrier oil. Usually 1 drop of essential oil in 2-3 tsp of carrier oil).

Peppermint Oil: is used for awakening the body, increasing focus, curing a headache and upset stomach.

Lavender Oil: is used to calm and relax the body, relieves panic and anxiety attacks, can be used to help induce a great sleep. Perfect for insomnia, stress or anxiety.

Sweet Orange: is used to treat stress, slow digestion, colds, dull skin, and can be used as a household cleaner. Also can be used as a safe insect repellent!

Rosemary: is used to for indigestion, stress relief, respiratory problems, promotes healthy hair growth, and boosts brain activity.

Tea Tree Oil: is used to fight infections, is effective against bacteria, reduces acne, lessens the appearance of scars, helps fight dandruff, can be used as a cleaner and can be used to deter ants.

Eucalyptus Oil: is used to decongest and can treat a cold, has antibacterial and antiseptic properties, can soothe insect bites, has a cooling and refreshing effect, can help stimulate the brain and can relieve stress and pain.

I love essential oils and they can be used to create your own lotions, leave in hair conditioners, perfumes and as well as providing healing. I am not saying that essential oils will cure you or will act like a medication would, but they are a natural solution to aid you with your overall health that is definitely worth trying.essoils2
