I really love changing up my hairstyle. The past 2 years I’ve gotten haircuts that I was never brave enough to previously get. It all started when I was recovering from my surgery for Stage IV Endometriosis. On November 2, 2017 I had an excision surgery performed laparoscopically. I was diagnosed with deep infiltrating Stage IV Endometriosis within the first few moments of the surgery. It took several more hours for my surgeon to try her best at cutting out the disease that had completely taken over my body. She wasn’t able to remove it all and this is only a treatment, as endo has no cure. Recovering from that surgery was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done in my life. I had gotten through something so horrible and so painful that for the first time in a while, I was able to recognize and embrace my own bravery again. That surgery did a lot for me, physically but also mentally. I realized after that the things I used to get caught up in and get stressed about were so minuscule now. I still remember about 3 weeks after my surgery (I could barely walk at that point) but I made a hair appointment and shuffled in because I was so excited about doing something with my hair that I hadn’t been brave enough to do in a long time. It’s little things like this that I treat myself with now. I feel more free to experiment and play around with my looks. One of my favourite ways to style my hair is a ‘tousled bob’ look, however my natural pin-straight hair and oily forehead sometimes make this a little more difficult. I have found that using dry shampoo has been the trick I needed to be able to give me the texture that I love. I make my own dry shampoo and I also buy my own dry shampoo as well (sometimes we all don’t have the time or resources to DIY everything for ourselves). I’ve been loving @ashandthornherbals Dry Shampoo in Dark. I scrunch it into my bangs and throughout my hair. I can feel confident about the ingredients because Nina of @ashandthornherbals is a herbalist and is incredibly knowledgeable about the ingredients and the amounts she uses in her products. Here’s to natural products that are created by hand, in small batches with sustainability in mind 💕
I stopped wearing perfume years ago due to the harmful effects that fragrances have on the body. I also avoid all products that have fragrance listed as an ingredient. Fragrances / perfume are classified as allergens, hormone disrupters, neurotoxins & carcinogens (to name a few). I choose to protect myself against all the chemicals in fragrance by only choosing natural scents. Lately I’ve been reaching for @ashandthornherbals blends made from organic sunflower oil and essential oils which were kindly gifted to me. They are packaged in reusable glass rollerballs and smell DIVINE. My favourite is Honey Cream, with Rosy Tobacco coming in at a close second. These scents are so rich and grounding, yet sweet and uplifting at the same time. Honey Cream has fruity notes of peach, apricot, cherry, honey, vanilla, caramel & cinnamon. Rosy Tobacco has notes of buttery vanilla, caramel, tobacco leaves, lily, geranium & rose. Feel free to use the code Clean Beauty for 10% off on @ashandthornherbals goodies! Have you tried these yet? Do you have a favourite natural scent you love to wear? Let me know in the comments below!
On my birthday my parents took me to my favourite antique store (Northside Antiques) and I decided to eye up all the vintage and antique cameras. I love photography, I’m by no means a professional however I do love taking photos. I took the time to research each camera on display and decided to give this vintage film camera a new home! To test if it works, I put some expired film in (I have a lot of expired film from my youth, my grandma, garage sales & some that was kindly gifted to me) and I just took the first roll of film in to get developed today! I will find out in 2 days what my new-to-me camera captured when I get an email with the photos! I’m so excited to see! I love giving working items that someone else didn’t want anymore a new home - after all, this camera still works and shouldn’t have to end up in a landfill! Also, the sound of the shutter and the sound of the flash bring me back to my youth and my old film camera I had as a little girl. I took that yellow brick of a camera with me everywhere! Here’s to hoping this camera captured some unique photographs! 🤞🏻 PS: if you’re looking for a new camera or lens yourself, check out secondhand or refurbished options first!
My favourite thing to do on a Sunday evening is to do a lengthy skincare regime, then settle into bed early with a good book. Lately, I have been picking up the @wastefreeplanet online magazine. In the most recent magazine issue, I wrote an article about giving the gift of thrift this holiday season! Walking in a winter wonderland 🌟 Last night I dressed up in my secondhand duds & went out to enjoy an indoor light display courtesy of @glow_saskatoon. It was magical & very festive! My friend & I had fun going through the event and taking photos of each other. If you check this event out, bring reusable cutlery for the food options so you can avoid the single use plastic options (easy as just chucking some of your stainless steel forks into your bag with a tea towel so you can bring them home without dirtying your bag) & a reusable water bottle as there are water-fountains located throughout the building! I’ve always connected with scents. I often joke that my sense of smell is the only thing that actually works right in my body 😂 I consistently feel emotionally tied to many scents and the memories they invoke. These are the Element Ritual Mists from @alaunawhelan which are made by hand, in small batches, with the purest ingredients. They can be misted on yourself, linens, bedding, towels, or in the space around you. These ritual mists are a blend of floral waters, essential oils, grain alcohol, a natural preservative & crystal gems. EARTH represents security through grounding, strength & growth. The Earth mist takes me back to horse back riding in Cypress Hills. WATER represents femininity through intuition, flexibility & receptivity. The Water mist reminds me of visiting the Tangled Garden in Nova Scotia. ETHER represents divinity through connection, fortitude & devotion. The Ether mist made me think of a hot day at the Great Sandhills. AIR represents clarity through focus, discernment & integrity. The Air mist is fresh and uplifting, which reminded me of eating a candy cane while playing outside during recess before the holidays. FIRE represents abundance through confidence, inspiration & creativity. The Fire mist reminds me of summer evenings while camping with a fire burning in the background. In the bottom of each unique mist are different gem stones. Upon closer inspection I was thrilled to realize that these gems have holes in them, which I will definitely be upcycling into jewelry once I am done the mists! Thank you so much @alaunawhelan for these mists & I cannot wait to try out more of your amazing products 🙌🏻 For the exact scent breakdown of each mist, check out her site!
